Starts February 13, 2018 | $390 (Materials Included)
Tuesday & Thursday 6-9pm - 5 weeks 30 hours

The beginning jewelry class will present the step by step processes of jewelry fabrication: designing, piercing, sawing, filing, texturing, soldering, polishing and stone setting. Using ring-making as an example, students will be taught to pierce and saw out shapes from copper and brass first then move to silver. Students will then be guided on techniques which can be used to add individualized texture to metal surfaces, using a variety of tools, such as stamps, hammers and the rolling mill. Students will then make a ring band from either sheet or wire in order to use these basic techniques, with a special focus on soldering, which can be one of the more challenging aspects of jewelry making. Finally, in order to add color students will choose a cabochon stone to add to their ring. Stone setting using fine silver bezels will be the final step in the process.

Along with extensive demonstrations, theory and practice, students will learn the basic techniques which will allow them to participate in the open studio.

The intermediate level bracelet class will present more of the step by step processes of jewelry fabrication: riveting, balling wire, hinges, fusing, hollow forming, making findings and patination. Students will continue to refine their soldering and finishing skills. Using bracelet making as an example, Students will be taught to rivet two pieces of metal together using tubing and solid wire. Students will then be taught how to fuse metal and create hollow forms from their fused pieces. From the hollow forming techniques students learn to make a hollow box catch clasp which nicely finishes every piece. The new techniques are great ways you can construct any design you desire. Riveting and hinges are a great way to add movement and connection in a fun new way.
